i grew up
in the Pacific Northwest, loving the smell of salt
water, walking on beaches, and eating fresh seafood. On
summer visits to my grandparent's farm in Montana, I
loved the smell of the barn, walking in fields, and
eating fresh food from my grandmother's garden.
In 1992 my mother returned to Montana. My husband and I followed
and settled in the Bitterroot Valley just south of
Missoula. Here we built a strawbale house and developed
gardens where we grow most of our own fruits and
vegetables.
I've taken photos for many years and have spent hours sifting
through my family's vintage pictures. In recent years I
have enjoyed working with these images on my blog,
website, and in art projects.
kitchen, garden, cottage
These are the places in my life that I like to think about,
experiment with, write about, and photograph. I
have always wanted to live in the country and, with a
slightly anachronistic tendency, to simplify my life in
an increasingly complex world.
Two years ago I read Barbara Kinglsolver's book Animal,
Vegetable, Miracle. Her story inspired me to eat as
locally as possible and live for one year eating only
fruit and vegetables that we grew ourselves. We liked
our experiment so much we're continuing.
For health
reasons I became gluten free several years ago. My biggest challenge has
been learning to bake with whole, fresh ground, gluten
free "grains" resulting in many interesting kitchen
experiments!
I am grateful to live in rhythm with the cycles of
nature. I enjoy nights filled with stars of the Milky
Way and phases of the moon....days with mountains,
fields, vibrant skies, and ever changing seasons.
